Daphne Loves Derby

Hello you silly people. I'm back. It's been a while, but it has been an enjoyable while. I have been listening to a lot of new music, and my soul is shouting at me to share it with you! and by share i mean,....not illegally, but like, the normal kind of sharing. like, the caring kind of sharing. So as much as i am tempted to go on about stacy clark, (because she is amazing!!!)but i will get to that soon enough.

I must tell you about a little thing called Daphne Loves Derby!!! When i order sherwood's first cd, i ordered DLD's cd with it! Commonly referred to as having emo lyrics, daphne puts their spin on indie pop alternative with a drum beat that just makes me want to get up and party.

So emo lyrics eh? So that means they all have black long hair, they scream, and nothing brings them more satisfaction than being suicidal? No weirdo. Please world, grow up. A term that once stood for "emotional" --e.g. filled with emotion-- is now a term for a group of people. The "emo" lyrics in Daphne is part of what makes them wonderful. Have a taste of "love and mercy"

Wake me up.
It feels like I've been sleeping since New Years day,
Dreaming my life away.
Please try to understand if you think I've changed.
And all my friends they say I waste too much time staring out of windows in airplanes.
No no I won't take the aisle seat.

Just take me away with blood and bravery.
I am the ever green that breaks the storm.
Sing hallelujah, I sold my soul to the darkening.

I don't know about you...but i like the lyrics. most def. Oh, and just wait until you hear those words in the midst of music....well...actually don't wait. Listen now!!

One of the first things i notice in music is the voice, and Kenny Choi does ultimately shape the bands sound. Is that a good thing? Yes times 5! With reflective lyrics and incredible catchy choruses, add a guitar and we have ourselves a band!
The album "On the strength of all Convinced" feels laid back, (in an active caring type of way) with acoustic driven songs. Songs like "If You're Lucky, No One Will Get Hurt" and "Death Will Keep You Company" have a rougher sound that makes for a variety of emotion (theres that word again!) and a contrast that is ever so pleasant.

Their 2007 release "good night witness light" shows that diversity of sound, adding a drumline inspired drum solo in "marching band intro" that sets up "thats our hero shot"--a trumpet driven pop song-- perfectly. The recording gives enough credit to Kenny's voice while still feeling full and rich (cue the trumpet and strings and add a pinch of echo). Their sound is in a wonderful stage of it's evolution, and I would say that they are in those glory years of their band's life.

So if you are up for a pop "emo" thrill, check out Daphne Loves Derby. With only obscure references to intimate relations, the entire Daphne Loves Derby library is 100% clean swear word wise. Do yourself a favor and head over to their purevolume and grab the free downloads they have posted! My favorite of their downloads is "If you're lucky no one will get hurt." I think you will hurt if you do not take the time and have a listen. Let me know what you think!

Kind of a side note, their bassist Jason Call...is Mormon!!!! o wait...did you just figure that i was mormon because i was excited? well, if i'm mormon or not, the lds church is way rad. So anyways, jason call finally decided to drop out of the band and serve his mission!!!! I know, what a stud. So before leaving, he is trying to release a cd from his new project the climbing. he doesn't have the greatest voice, but the songs are definitely catchy and several references to his mission are evident.

until next post, keep it chill,
and everything will
work out just fine in the end

Sherwood

So when i first started looking for music, i was on amazon looking as "people who bought this item also bought..." Somehow i was lucky enough to find a band called SHERWOOD. Their debut album entitled Sing, but Keep Going is a piece of summer joy bundles with insightful lyrics and an indie pop sound that is hard to not sing along to. Actually, the song I'll wait for you has an a Capella section that pretty much makes it mandatory to sing along.

Recently signed by MySpace Records, Sherwood is gaining a fan base that the definitely deserve. They've toured with the likes of Relient K and Motion City Soundtrack. I've met the guys on tour, and must say they are down to earth and just plain fun to be around. You have not lived until you have seen Mikey play keys live. Along with the new label came a new record. A Different Light throws in a track from their first album, and their Summer ep. The tracks, surprisingly enough, are presented in a different light. Adding to their arsenal of catchy songs, A Different Light was no disappointment. Check out and the best in me and give up! and just lose yourself to the music.

All in all, Sherwood is a great example of feel good indie pop rock. They are an oasis of summer in this never-ending-utah-winter. Get up and dance, or sit down and sing. Whatever you are doing, listen to sherwood: A foundation for my library, and a music inspiration. Sherwood will always have a spot in my favorites of all time.

Check out their purevolume to stream some songs or head over to their new band site for all sorts of great content and their very own internet store.

if you liked sherwood, check out making april and search sherwood on last.fm

ps: check out a clip from one of their show in sacramento [the sound is scratchy...sorry!]....watch the keyboard man Mikey--on the far left--in the first song. (amazing)

the basic idea

i used to think there wasn't clean good music. there was either clean or good music. But never both. After boycotting inappropriate songs, I found the world of underground independent alternative indie joyous music. Since then, I have found so much music and have filled an ipod with clean stuff! So, I hope i can share with you some of the great music that I have found in my search for music bliss. And i hope people actually find this blog and use it often!

for now, here are some sites that are a must-see for music fans. Without these, who knows how life would go on!? the last three are the best for finding artists that sound like a band that you already love. check it out. my favorites are mos. def. purevolume, and last.fm. Absolutepunk is a wonderful blog that gives all sorts of new news info about new releases, free music, and other random jewels.
